Learning Circles

Learning Circles Australia were contracted by the NSW Cervical Screening Program to produce a peer education activity that addresses cervical screening issues and the older women.

The learning circle approach is built on the fundamental principals of adult learning. Adult motivation to learn is usually practical, arising from life experiences or community problems and challenges that can be addressed by acquiring further knowledge or skills. Unlike young children, adults bring stories of life experiences to their learning. They may also have rather fixed theories, values and attitudes. The best adult learning encourages and supports a process of critical reflection on what we think we already know.

Bodies Matter - The Pap test kit is a learning circle designed for older women to discuss health issues that directly relate to their well-being. The Bodies Matter PDF can be downloaded here. The order form can be downloaded here.

The first session stimulates discussions on leisure activities that influenced women's lifestyles in the 1940s, 50s and 60s and how this had an impact on their knowledge and attitudes toward sexual health.

The second session discusses current health issues; the introduction of health testing programs and what is involved in taking action to have a Pap test.

The third session encourages women to become an active ambassador for Pap testing among friends and family.
