The costs associated with having a Pap test will vary between providers. It is important to ask about costs at the time of booking your appointment.
Medicare covers most of the cost for a Pap test. Some health professionals ‘bulk bill’, so there’ll be no cost to you. Others may charge a small fee for their time or for the laboratory tests. For many women, the Pap test is available at no charge.
If your health professional doesn’t bulk bill, there’ll be a fee, which will be the difference between the Medicare rebate and the fees charged by your health professional and the laboratory that analyses your Pap test. You may be asked to pay the full fee, and then have to claim the rebate from Medicare.
If you’re worried about the cost of the test, you should ask what the cost will be when you make your appointment.
After you’ve chosen where you’d prefer to have your Pap test, call and make an appointment. You should tell the receptionist that your appointment is for a Pap test, as you may need a longer appointment.
Interpreters are available to help you make an appointment. If you’d like an interpreter, call 13 14 50. You can also have a family member or friend help you, and to attend the appointment with you.
